NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH FINDINGS
ACMELLA OLERFACEA
Study of analgesic and anti inflammatory effects of the plant spilanthes acmella var; oleraceaSpilanthes acmella var; oleracea is a herb belonging to the family Asteraceae. In India it is found through out the country in tropical regions. From the pharmacological study carried out it was evident that the whole plant of Spilanthes acmella var; oleracea was endowed with significant anti- inflammatory and analgesic activity there by justifying their use in traditional system of medicine.
BOSWELLIA SERRATA
The resin of Boswellia: The medicinal properties are also widely recognized, mainly for the treatment of inflammatory conditions, as well as in some cancerous diseases, wound healing and its antimicrobial activity.
Conclusion:
In a 2014 NCHI study, Boswellia serrata significantly increased the Pain Threshold and Pain Tolerance force and time compared to placebo. Both study medications were well tolerated. Further multiple dose studies may be needed to establish the analgesic efficacy of the drug.
Camellia Oleifera
M.oleifera is a medicinal plant traditionally used for skin sores, sore throat and eye infections. Recently, the wound healing property of the leaves of M. oleifera was has been well demonstrated experimentally in both in vivo and in vitro models.
CBD HEMP OIL
When muscles are damaged, it becomes difficult to heal until inflammation is eased – and that’s where CBD hemp oil becomes helpful to reduce the inflammation. Cannabidiol is a compound extracted from the cannabis sativa plant, and is beneficial to the health of a human being as it does not make people feel “high”.
Almost 50 million (22.2%) adult Americans over 18 were diagnosed with arthritis in 2007–2009, most prominently osteoarthritis and the autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis. A projected increase to 67 million is anticipated by 2030 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2010). The most effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis is injectable fusion-proteins which sequester the most prominent proinflammatory cytokine tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα). These chimeric antibodies may halt progression of the disease, but side-effects include immune suppression (Crawford and Curtis, 2008; Furst, 2010; Hastings et al., 2010). Neurogenic drive also contributes to severity of arthritic inflammation (Sluka et al., 1994), and may contribute to its reoccurrence.
Cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors are potential targets for reducing pain and inflammation (Clayton et al., 2002; Richardson et al., 2008; Zuardi, 2008). Cannabis sativa contains approximately 80 different cannabinoids of which Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are primary (Mechoulam and Shvo, 1963; Mechoulam, 1970; Turner et al., 1980). These compounds are chemically similar to endogenous endocannabinoid lipid derivatives including anandamide (arachidonoylethanolamide) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol. At present THC and CBD are available combined in the oral spray Sativex® (GW Pharmaceuticals plc, Cambridge, UK) which is prescribed to adult patients for neuropathic pain. Psychoactive THC side-effects are experienced, however, and long-term use of cannabis sativa has been shown to increase risk of developing psychosis and schizophrenia (Berman et al., 2004; Malone et al., 2010). Research is ongoing to find better, effective cannabinoids and better routes of application.
Oleuropein
Major Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Olive Leaf Extract.
Abstract
Olive leaves are rich in polyphenolic compounds that are known to have antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities. Therefore, olive leaf extract (OLE) is considered as a natural supplement. In this study we evaluated the antibacterial and the anti-inflammatory effect of OLE and its individual phenolic components in vitro. Polymorphonuclear cells (PMNCs) were isolated from the whole blood using Histopaque solution and cultured in RPMI-enriched medium. Tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) level was determined by ELISA after 24 h of lipopolysaccharide stimulation. The antibacterial activity of OLE was determined by well diffusion assay. We found a significant decrease in TNFα secretion level in PMNCs culture treated with OLE. Oleuropein is the only OLE component that has shown anti-inflammatory effects at a concentration of 20 μg/mL. Furthermore, OLE exhibited antibacterial activity against some gram positive bacterial strains; however, gram negative bacterial strains were resistant to OLE. Downregulation of TNFα secretion in PMNCs culture in response to OLE treatment indicates that this polyphenol-rich extract has an anti-inflammatory effect, and oleuropein is the major OLE component responsible for this effect. The antibacterial activity of OLE is limited to gram positive bact
